The Mathematics Department aims to fulfill six basic goals in the teaching of Mathematics. The department members strive:
-
to provide every student with the fundamental concepts of mathematics.
-
to develop the ability to think logically and apply mathematical concepts to daily life situations.
-
to encourage individual initiative and provide adequate stimulation for all levels of activity.
-
to prepare qualified students for college.
-
to afford each student the opportunity to work with computers and calculators.
-
to teach students how to function properly in a world that requires skill in the use of computers and calculators. Our students are required to have a TI 82, 83, or 83 Plus calculator.
Mathematics is an important prerequisite not just for college preparation but a necessity in order to function capably in today's society. Three credits in mathematics are required of all students attending Father Judge. However, the Mathematics Department recommends that each student take more than the minimal requirements.
Course offerings in mathematics are designed to meet the spectrum of student needs. Talented math students can participate in a five year program culminating in senior year with an advanced placement course in Calculus. College-bound students have at their disposal a full four year program which aims to prepare the student for college work in mathematics. In addition, the Mathematics Department has a program of study designed just for the slower students. The department members are committed to training these students to function capably in a math-related world.
Prerequisites for math courses include success in the previous sequence of courses, and marks are used as objective indicators of success. Requests for exemptions must be presented to the Math Chairperson and the Studies Director before the deadline for registration.
